His Eminence `Imad al-A`lam wa Thiqat al-Islam Mr. Aqa Shaykh Muhammad Husayn Behjati- may his graces last:
Your two noble missives were received. I pray to Almighty God for your good health and confirmation. As for the temporary marriage contract, one hour, two hours, with the intention of close relationship, «1» the opinion is that if they seriously intend to marry even though for the aforementioned intent, the contract is correct. However, precaution is in order as to the desired extent. For those who have already done so, there is no problem as to marriage relationship; they should give in. As for those who have not yet chosen a domicile, if they intend to return home or Qum, for example, their namaz «2» is shortened.
At the moments when the supplications are answered, I hope for your prayers. May peace be upon you.
Rouhullah al-Mousawi al-Khomeini
«۱»- The inquiry is about temporary marriage [mut`ah] that is done for the reason of intimacy. For further information on mut`ah, visit:http://www.al-islam.org/al-serat/muta . «۲»- Namaz: the Persian term for the ritual prayer.
