Shawwal 16,1392 AH
My dear Ahmad,
Your letter dated `Id al-Fitr arrived. I am glad to know that you and others are all fine. I ask God, the Most High, to grant you health and happiness. It is good that while engaged in Makasib and Kifayah, you attend also `the advanced studies' [dars al-kharij] lessons; «1» choose the one which is closer to your understanding. Convey my regards to Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (your) esteemed uncle, may his blessings last. «2» Praise be to God, the Exalted, I and the rest are fine. Husayn has completely recuperated «3» and now is going to school. Give the enclosed envelope to Mr. Lavasani «4» through a reliable means. I ask God, the Most High, for your success in studies and purification. May peace be with you. Give name to my darling, «5» apply for a birth certificate for him, and give my regards to his respected mother. «6»
Your father
«۱»- Makasib and Kifayah are courses that students of the theological centers must pass on high level. Makasib [Al-Makasib] is written by Shaykh Ansari (d.۱۲۸۱ AH) and Kifayat al-Usoul is the work of Akhound Mulla Muhammad Kazim Khorasani (d.۱۳۲۹ AH). These are lecture courses on high level. Theological seminary lessons are about fiqh [jurisprudence] and usoul al-fiqh [principles of jurisprudence] that strengthen the deductive reasoning of the individuals. The teacher who is a well-versed jurist himself puts forth the issues and discusses related viewpoints and arguments as well as his own view based on logical proofs. «۲»- Mr. Murtada Pasandideh. «۳»- Mr. Sayyid Mustafa Khomeini's child. Imam Khomeini is referring in the letter to his successful appendicitis operation. «۴»- Mr. Sayyid Muhammad Sadiq Lavasani, Imam Khomeini's fully-empowered representative in Tehran. «۵»- Mr. Sayyid Ahmad Khomeini's child (Hasan). «۶»- Mrs. Fatimah Tabataba'i.
